TextEN  In 1944 Nakajima got the order to develop a jet-propelled fast fighter bomber, which could be build by rather untrained personnel. It should be possible to produce it in caves or tunnels. In the beginning only engines of the types Tsu-11/Ne-10/Ne-12 were available, all not sufficient and no real jet engines. zur Verfügung, allesamt keine echten Strahltriebwerke. Later the Ne-20, based on the German BMW-003 became available as a (nnearly) sufficieent engine. The maiden flight was on August 7th, 1945. But on the second start the prototype was destroyed by an accident.
Some further machines were nearly finished when the war ended. The planned tasks were extended by figher role, Kamikaze, trainer, but were never realized. As a fighter the power would not have been sufficient. Nakajima recognized this quite early and developped the Karyu.
Some source assign the navy designation J9Y to the Kikka, but it is not known, if this ever was an official designation.
